The story of Coventry Bears Rugby League Club
by James Oddy
The Coventry Bears was formed as an amateur rugby league club in 1998 and joined the Rugby League Conference in 2000. After considerable success in the amateur game, including winning the Rugby League Conference in 2002 and National League 3 in 2004, and competing successfully in the National Conference League, they joined the professional ranks of the Rugby Football League in 2015.
This book looks at their second season in League 1, the development of the club and the people involved. It includes interviews with the club’s owner and managing director Alan Robinson, club president Ron Banks and first team coach Tom Tsang. It also considers the challenges, problems and pressures of establishing a club in the West Midlands, not a traditional rugby league area.
Written by James Oddy, it will be of interest to all rugby league fans. It also includes reflections on the Four Nations matches in the city in November 2016 and an appendix on the pre-First World War Coventry Northern Union team.
