Kiwis, Wigan and The Wire

My Life and Rugby League

By Ces Mountford

Ces Mountford is recognised as one of the greatest Kiwi Rugby League players of all time. He joined Wigan in 1946, and was a key member of the great post-war Wigan team. In 1951, he was the first foreign player to win the Lance Todd Trophy.

In 1951, he joined Warrington as manager and stayed with the club for 10 years, including some of their greatest triumphs, including the 1954 Cup and Championship Double. He then returned to New Zealand, and developed Rugby League coaching, including managing the national team. He was awarded the MBE for his services to Rugby League. Now living in retirement in Australia, this book looks back on a fascinating life, including growing up on the West Coast of New Zealand and his experience in British Rugby League. The book also includes contributions from many past players and colleagues. It is well illustrated with photographs and cartoons from his full Rugby League career.

"Every moment of time spent with Ces was valued. He was a special New Zealander who enhanced the game of Rugby League and our country."

Howie Tamati MBE - New Zealand international player and coach

"Ces was a great favourite with those Wigan crowds"

Brian Nordgren - Wigan and Other Nationalities
